6 Of The Dirtiest Common Areas In Your House

Did you know that there are some forms of bacteria that can divide (multiply) every 20 minutes?

Of course, the setting has to be at just the right temperature and they must have the required nutrients but if you think about the speed at which the bacteria are multiplying, you have to wonder if the cleaning you are doing right now is doing anything?

The speed at which bacteria can divide is also why sometimes you can feel sick so quickly after you are exposed to the infection. (Think about the times you wake up in the morning feeling great only to feel as though you are death warmed up right before you arrive at work.)

A study that was conducted looking at the most contaminated things in your home revealed something crazy like 340 bacteria on 30 different objects.

The problem with bacteria in your home is that they don’t just keep to themselves. They love to spread and can easily spread between people or from people to surfaces. The same study (as above) also looked at what the factors are that can influence germ life. It came up with these:

  • Surface type
  • Living habits
  • Lifestyle
  • Cleaning habits

So here are 6 of the common areas in your house that dirt tends to hide…

1. The kitchen

It’s been found that places, where food is either prepared or stored, have more bacteria contamination than anywhere else in the home. Think about that for a second. We’re talking about your kitchen, the place where you prepare and likely consume food. Think about that for a second.

The figures are scary too. Over 75% of sponges and dishcloths can contain Salmonella and E.Coli. Whereas only 9% of those bacteria can be found on bathroom taps and handles.

KEEP A LOOK OUT FOR THESE THINGS TO KEEP CLEAN:

  • Cutting boards (plastic/wood/bamboo)
  • Coffee machines
  • Fridge – particularly places where unwashed/uncooked food is kept
  • Kitchen sink and all countertops (even the ones you don’t use often)

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN KEEP THOSE AREAS CLEAN:

  • Make sure you use either disinfectant wipes or a sterilised cloth soaked in a good amount of disinfectant liquid to wipe all taps, handles, surfaces, and countertops
  • Heat up your damp sponges for one minute in the microwave to ensure you kill off any bacteria that may be lurking on them
  • You can also soak your sponges in a bowl of warm water together with a half teaspoon of your usual concentrated bleach (like Javel).
  • Be sure to change your dishcloths every week
  • Always wash your hands before and after you deal with food

2. All Handles & switches

These are areas that you tend to pass over and think would not have much bacteria on them but they are in fact areas that you should be making an effort to keep even cleaner. Think about it. How many times a day your household can switch lights on and off, open doors, open cupboards. And it may not just be one person performing this action over and over, different people (spreading different germs) are making these areas of your house turn into bacteria breeding areas.

The most common areas like this to look out for are:

  • Bathroom light switches
  • Fridge handles
  • Stove knobs
  • Microwave knobs/controls or handles

Passing a disinfectant wipe or cloth soaked in disinfectant liquid over these areas once to twice a week can help to keep your house that much cleaner. Remember though, don’t pass the same wipe over every area. Use a new one and be sure to rinse the cloth each time before wiping a new area if you are using a cloth.

3. The bathroom

This may seem the like obvious place in the house where dirt is hiding and you’d be right. While it is not the most inhabited area of the house (with germs) it is still very important to keep this area clean. The moisture in the air in this area of the house because of the hot water from the shower turns this part of the house into a breeding ground for bacteria that require a bit of warmth to thrive. There are a few spots you need to pay special attention to in your bathroom, these are:

  • The shower
  • All the drains
  • Taps/shower head
  • The floor area around the toilet
  • Bath towels
  • Toothbrushes

This space is one that requires daily attention because of how frequent we use the bathroom and how probable it is that bacteria and germs will be present each day. Be sure to wipe down all surfaces in the bathroom with a disinfectant and perform a thorough cleaning session once a week. For those small, hard to reach spaces, take an old toothbrush and use it to help clean. (Make sure you keep this toothbrush far from the ones being used)

Remember that as the summer months approach, the temperature can make this area an even more dangerous germ area. Replace your towels at least once a week (more if they begin to smell quickly) and be sure to not let them sit and stay damp. They should be aired out and allowed to dry each time to prevent the spread of even more germs.

4. Laundry

In some cases, your bathroom may double up as a laundry area too. This means that when you do your washing, it’s best to remove it from the machine as soon as you can. Allowing the clothes to sit in the machine is the perfect way to allow germs to flourish and multiply. You should try to transfer the clothes to the dryer or hang them out to dry within at least 30 minutes from when their wash cycle finishes. And if you happen to forget, and leave the clothes in for longer than this – anything after 30 minutes, it’s actually better to have them run in another cycle instead of removing them.

5. Living Room or Home office

This is another common area in the house which will see many hands and feet passing through. Things like remote controls, keyboards, phones, and game controllers are prime spots for bacteria to be present. Studies have found that things like yeast and mould can be found on these items which is why it’s worth making sure you keep this area clean.

If you have carpets in this area of the house, this makes it even more susceptible to bacteria because things like carpets can hold up to 8 times its own weight in dust and dirt. This makes this item dirtier than things like streets!

Let’s not even get started on the couch… This is another major problem area for things like dust mites to live and thrive. The amount of dust and dirt that your couches can hold can be scary to realise but you can keep these items clean.

Wipe down all remotes, surfaces, and items regularly and be sure to do a thorough cleaning of the area at least once a week.

6. Personal Items

If you have a handbag or bag of any kind, you could be transporting germs in and out of your house every single day. Things like earphones, phones, bags, wallets, lunch boxes, and keys are easy ways to do this.

Things like yeast and mould can easily propagate on these items that you are handling often and most likely every day. Check out electronic-safe wipes that can help keep these items cleaner and less infected with germs.

Remember that doing things like washing your hands can go a very long way in combatting germs in your house.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Dust That You Wish Weren’t True

Do you always feel like you are cleaning your house? More so, do you always pick up a questionable amount of dust up when you sweep? So much that it makes you wonder how so much dust has accumulated in such a short time between the last time you swept and now.

You’re not alone. It happens a lot and that’s because dust is one of those things we wish we didn’t have to deal with but is pretty much all around us. As long as we open our doors and windows, shed our skin and cut our nails, dust will forever be the unwelcome guest in our homes.

This is why it’s essential to understand what you are dealing with and just how important it is to make sure that you get rid of the dust as regularly as possible. Our health actually depends on this.

Ever heard of dust mites?
Maybe you’ve heard of these little creatures and maybe you haven’t. Dust mites are spider-like creatures that pretty much live everywhere that we live. This is because their diet consists of our dead skin cells. So think about all the most frequented places in your house like beds, couches, carpets, you name it… If you had to go up to each of these objects now and say hi, you’d be saying hello to thousands of these creatures. And here’s another fun little fact (ok, not so fun). Ever wondered why we sneeze when there’s dust in the air? That’s because we are reacting to the mite’s decomposing bodies and faecal pellets.

#tip
Make sure you clean up all crumbs, spills, and clutter often as well as vacuum your items like mattresses and upholstery as often as possible. The more often you make use of your vacuum, the cleaner your air will be.

Dust mites aren’t just in your house
Thought that you were only sharing your home with these little creatures? Wrong. They are also in your car. Maybe right now you’re asking where exactly they could be. Think about every place you touch in the car. Things like steering wheels, handles, gear knobs etc are some of the more common areas where they can be in your car.

#tip
Vacuum your car as often as possible. Use a disinfectant wipe on things like your steering wheel, handles and any place you touch often and carry things like hand sanitizer for good measure. Never leave bits of food in the car and don’t allow spills to go unattended for long periods of time.

Your pet is a dust mite magnet
We’re not talking about the hair your pets shed all year round (that is annoying too though) but rather why they’re a dust mite magnet. For starters, dust mites also feed off your pet’s dead skin cells which are usually spread in the form of dust. The mites are also attracted to the proteins which are found in their saliva and urine.  If your animals come and go from inside and outside, they are probably more likely to have even more mites following them around.

#tip
Before you decide you never want any pets again, make sure that your animals are always well groomed and clean. Brush their fur often and be sure to clean up any stray hairs that get left behind before you give the dust mites any more reasons to call your house their home.

What’s at the bottom of your shoes?
If you and/or your family wear shoes in the house, then you are essentially tracking all the things you’ve stood in like pollen, animals faeces, motor oil and dirt (to name a few things) into your house. So each place you’re walking into with those shoes on is getting all that tracked into the floor.

#tip
The floor is one of the most dust-mite riddled spots in houses because of the foot traffic it sees. Make sure you vacuum your floors as often as possible (daily is best) and be sure to wash your hardwood or tile floors weekly with hot soapy water.

They like to cuddle
Whatever items have fibres in them, will have dust mites in them. Upholstered furniture, comforters, pillows, couches and even plush toys are like little pieces of paradise for these creatures. So just when you think you and your husband/wife are about to snuggle on the couch while you ‘netflix and chill’, think again. You’re not alone.

#tip
Furniture needs to be vacuumed regularly. Your mattress should also be cleaned regularly and things like bed sheeting must be washed at very high temperatures at least once a week.

6 Reasons Why It’s So Important To Clean Your Mattress

A lot of people think that cleaning their house in places where they can see the dirt is how they need to keep a home clean but the truth is that there are a lot of places in our homes that we cannot see how dirty they get.

Ever heard the expression, “What you don’t know can’t kill you?”, well, in this case, it’s “what you don’t see won’t kill you” and it’s the absolute wrong way to go about keeping your house clean.

One of the places you need to be paying (extremely) close attention to is your mattress and considering how much time you spend using it as well as how close you get to it, it’s worth knowing why it’s that important.

Dust mite haven
Dust mites love these areas in your home because of the fibres that mattresses have. Also, you sleeping on the mattress and shedding your skin on it gives the dust mites all the warmth, comfort, protection and nourishment they need to thrive. Do you think you could sleep as soundly as you do knowing that your mattress could be a bed bug infested haven? It is really important to get rid of these mites from your mattress primarily because not doing it can have serious health implications for you and your family. Using your Kirby Avalir 2 to vacuum your mattress will not only ensure you are breathing easier at night but that the dirt is not staying trapped deep in the mattress. Sadly, most vacuum cleaners these days are not powerful enough to draw the dirt from deep inside the mattress, therefore leaving it trapped and leaving yourself exposed to the health risks.

Dust is unhealthy
If you suffer from allergies or someone you live with suffers from allergies then you will understand how painful and annoying it can be when something triggers your sinuses. Going to sleep on a dirty mattress every night doesn’t only aggravate your allergies but if you are not someone who suffers from allergies or asthma, the dust can actually eventually make you allergic. The longer you keep sleeping on a dirty mattress, the more you are putting yourself at risk.

A clean mattress means a healthier nights sleep
Think about it, sleeping on a dirty mattress every day, breathing the impurities in while you sleep is bound to get to you after a while. If you haven’t already picked up allergies, chances are the dust in your bed is causing you health problems that you may not even be aware of. A clean mattress means you are able to breathe freely and not be at risk to inhale all of the dust, impurities and dust mites lurking below. Plus a clean mattress and clean sheets feel really great.

Avoid skin issues
If you are someone who has problems with sensitive skin then you should know that continuing to sleep on a mattress that is not clean only puts your skin at further risk. Dust and impurities can be a nightmare for people who have sensitive skin as well as leave you feeling itchy all over, all the time. It only takes a slight interaction with dust to have a reaction to it and the effects can last for hours after. The last thing you should feel after waking up is itchy and uncomfortable.

Improve your comfort level
There’s a reason we don’t simply throw all our garbage in the middle of our living room and sit on it to eat, relax or watch tv. Apart from it being totally unhygienic, it is not comfortable. The same goes for your mattress, just because you cannot see the dirt, does not mean it’s not there. Humans are creatures of comfort and who can blame us, relaxing on a nice comfortable bed is a great way to end the day. Wouldn’t it be great to feel like this all the time and not worry about what could be crawling around beneath you or even on you?

This is why it is essential that you keep your mattress clean. It’s just the best thing you can do for you and your family’s health.
